The RS 3 has a well-documented weak-spot list. Here it is — and every item on it is something we still buy:

• Haldex and rear differential service. The all-wheel-drive coupling and, on newer cars, the torque splitter depend on fluids and pumps that owners skip; failures present as front-drive behaviour or warning lights. The service is cheap done on time and expensive done late, which sorts sellers from keepers.
• S tronic mechatronic faults. The dual-clutch gearbox's mechatronic unit is the RS 3's known electronic weak point, showing as harsh shifts and limp modes. Dealer-level diagnosis and parts pricing make it a bill owners often choose to sell instead of pay.
• Water pump and thermostat leaks. The five-cylinder shares the VW Group's plastic cooling hardware and its leak pattern, buried at the front of a dense engine bay. A coolant light on an RS 3 usually means labour, and labour is the listing.
• Brake and tyre appetite. A 400-horsepower compact driven as intended consumes brakes and tyres like a much bigger car. The second full set, arriving with a service and a water pump, is the arithmetic behind most RS 3 listings.
