Common XJ problems we still buy

Every XJ develops its known issues with age, and these are the ones we see most. Private buyers walk away from every one of them; we price them in instead:

• Air suspension failure. Both generations use air suspension, and air springs, compressors, and height sensors fail with age, leaving the XJ sitting low or riding harshly on its bump stops. Air suspension work is the flagship repair these cars are known for, and it often prompts a sale.
• Coolant leaks on the 5.0L V8. The X351's 5.0L V8 leaks coolant from plastic crossover and heater pipes and the water pump, in places that require major disassembly to reach. Owners who face the full reseal on an aging flagship regularly decide selling is the better economics.
• Timing chain and tensioner wear. The direct-injected 5.0L V8 and supercharged V6 can rattle from timing chain tensioner wear, especially with stretched oil intervals. Chain work is expensive on a car whose market value has fallen far from new, which is precisely when owners sell.
• Electronics, door latches, and comfort faults. Touchscreens, soft-close door latches, seat modules, and sunroof mechanisms all fault on used XJs, and diagnosis needs Jaguar-capable equipment. A flagship with several dead features stops feeling like one, and that disappointment is a common reason owners move on.
