• Theta II engine failure and recall. Optimas with the 2.4-liter and 2.0-liter turbo Theta II engines are the subject of major recalls and warranty extensions for connecting rod bearing wear that can cause knocking, stalling, or engine failure. Owners facing an engine diagnosis outside coverage often sell rather than pay for a replacement.
• Excessive oil consumption. Even engines that have not failed are widely reported to consume oil between changes, risking low-oil damage and fouled catalytic converters. Sellers who are tired of topping up and monitoring oil frequently move on instead of opening the engine.
